All about the win for Grant
Saturday, 6 April 2013
After a run of four consecutive defeats for his side Spartans keeper Conor Grant revealed that today's game with Worksop Town had been identified as a key one ahead of two tough looking away trips this week. Spartans hit the road with two trips to the Midlands to face Hednesford Town and Stafford Rangers in the space of four days this week meaning the 3-2 win over the Tigers was very welcome. Not that it was an easy win for Grant and his team mates as they conspired to miss two spot kicks, finally achieving success from the spot five minutes from time. but it was all about the three points for the former Gretna and Dundee United keeper.
He said "It doesn't surprise me with us this season, I don't think we have the best record from the spot this season do we. However the most important thing is the three points. We have ended a horrible run where we haven't played that badly but haven't managed to get a win so the three points is the most important thing here today. We have tough games coming up so today was a massive win for us."
The Croft Park win meant that Spartans gained revenge for the 8-1 Halloween hammering inflicted on them by the Tigers earlier in the season with giant striker Tom Denton causing havoc for the Spartans back four. However rather than seeing his side focus on that result Grant revealed that it was more about the win rather than anything else and insisted that the previous meeting hadn't played a key part in the pre-match preparations.
He said "The result down there wasn't spoken about as much as people may have thought. We just wanted to put that to bed but obviously other people brought it up. We owed them one I guess you could say and we just wanted to get the win and I'm delighted that we have. Maybe we didn't get the eight that they did but I think we could have given the chances we had but it was nice a win more than anything."
Despite not getting on the scoresheet for Spartans Dan Maguire walked away with the man of the match award, on the same day he collected his second consecutive Port of Blyth Player of the Month Award. Grant was delighted to see his young team mate recieve the plaudits from sponsors and Spartans supporters alike although did jokingly reveal he was worried such rewards may lead to problems for the nineteen year old.
He joked "How many man of the matches has Dan had now?. He's going to be an alcoholic the amount of champagne he's been getting isn't he?. He's been different class though and his energy and work rate has been brilliant up top for us. The fans obviously appreciate it and clearly the sponsors do as well but it's well deserved."
