Arrival | Curran signs contract with Spartans

Blyth Spartans AFC is pleased to announce goalkeeper Alex Curran has joined on a permanent basis.

Since linking up with Spartans in the off-season, Curran has not only impressed manager Michael Nelson and his backroom staff but supporters as well.

Curran pulled off a number of standout saves in the pre-season win over Middlesbrough under-23s before returning to keep a clean sheet against Brackley Town on his competitive debut.

He will now offer competition to Alex Mitchell in between the sticks, adding further strength and depth to Nelson's squad.

Offering Curran a contract would not have been possible if it weren't for the size of the crowds at Croft Park this season.

In our three home games so far, we've twice broken the 1,000 mark for the visit of Alfreton Town and Brackley, while a strong 778 witnessed our 2-0 win over AFC Telford United.

The extra gate revenue from those games has allowed Nelson to bolster his squad as he and the players look to build on their strong start to the National League North campaign.

Nelson explained: "Alex is someone we worked with at the back end of last season as Gary Neasham was in charge of his rehab from an injury.

"He played for us against Middlesbrough in pre-season and did very well so we've monitored him during the start of the season.

"He came in and played on Saturday while Alex Mitchell attended the birth of his first child and we've managed to put a permanent deal together to bring him on board.

"We have been able to do this deal due to the great attendances we've had over the three home games - bringing in some valuable revenue to help build the squad.

"Alex will now provide very good competition in what was probably the only position in the team where we were lacking competition."

On signing, Curran said: "I think every player should want to test themselves at the highest level they can.

"When the gaffer offered me the chance to come and work with the calibre of player we have here, it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down.

"All of the lads and the fans have been great with me. I'm delighted to be part of the squad and I am looking forward to helping out where I can this season."
