Arrival | Ex-Blackburn youngster joins Spartans

Blyth Spartans AFC is pleased to announce the arrival of former Blackburn Rovers youngster Connor Thomson.

Thomson, 24, arrives at Croft Park having spent the last two seasons at National League North rivals Gateshead, where he briefly worked under boss Michael Nelson.

As a kid, Thomson spent time on the books of Carlisle United and then joined Blackburn's academy in December 2014.

He represented the Championship side at under-23s level - which included a loan spell at Barrow - before departing in January 2018 to pursue senior opportunities.

Halifax Town soon provided his first taste of first-team football but after 11 appearances for the Yorkshire club, Newcastle-born Thomson returned to the North East with The Heed.

Thomson played 25 times in the National League for Gateshead as they narrowly missed out on the play-offs in 2018/19.

For most of last season, Thomson enjoyed a successful loan spell at Northern Premier side Scarborough Athletic - scoring the winner in their 3-2 derby win over Whitby Town.

Thomson said: "I'm over the moon (to be here). I've been in contact with the gaffer for a few weeks now, so to eventually get it sorted is very good. I'm just looking forward to the season now."

Michael Nelson added: "He is someone who can play down the middle as a 9 but he can also play in those wide positions. He's over six foot, really athletic, quick and in really good shape."
