Arrival | Ex-Newcastle winger Callum Roberts signs
Friday, 30 August 2019
Blyth Spartans are delighted to announce the signing of former Newcastle United winger Callum Roberts.
The 22-year-old joined the Magpies academy at the age of eight and moved up through every age group.
On January 3, 2015, Roberts made his first-team debut during a 1-0 FA Cup third round defeat to Leicester City as a second-half substitute.
Soon after his senior bow, Roberts had a brief loan spell at Gateshead before returning to Newcastle to become a leading player in the under-23s set-up.
Roberts then furthered his senior education when current Blyth Spartans manager Lee Clark took him north of the border to Kilmarnock in 2017.
And after a string of standout performances in the under-23s run to the quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy last season, Roberts was handed his second first team bow, which would prove to be an extra memorable occasion.
In an FA Cup third round replay at Ewood Park in January, Roberts netted his first-ever senior goal in front of the BT Sport cameras, volleying home a Jacob Murphy cross from inside the penalty area.
A short loan spell at League Two outfit Colchester United followed before leaving the Magpies in the summer after 14 years at the club.
