Blyth Spartans sign Wayne Buchanan

Blyth Spartans can confirm the signing of Northern Irish central defender Wayne Buchanan.

Wayne has featured in the majority of Blyth's friendlies in this pre-season campaign, where he has appeared a calm, commanding defender. He has stuck up an instant understanding with new Spartans assistant manager Chris Swailes at the heart of a Blyth defence, hoping to stiffen up from last season's defensive frailties. The two formed a formidable double act in the 'behind closed doors' game at Hamilton and it will hoped by the Croft Park faithful that these two, aided by the the impressive full back pairing of Stephen Harrison and Phil Cave, can flourish over the upcoming campaign to form a strong and cohesive defensive unit.

The 28 year old, 6 foot 2 defender started his career with Premiership side Bolton Wanderers, where he made one first team performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup. A 2002 loan move to Chesterfield saw Buchanan pick up Football League experience with the Spireites. Following his release from Bolton the defender signed for Lisburn Distillery in the Northern Irish Premier Division, where he enjoyed over 200 appearances, many as Captain.

In 2009 he tried a new life in Australia (where he had a trial with Adie Webster's former side Perth Glory) before returning to England, where he signed for local rivals Gateshead.

Welcome to the club Wayne!
