Gareth Williams Statement

Sunday, 1 August 2010

Gareth Williams, the captain of Blue Square Bet North club Blyth Spartans has spoken about his departure from the club.

Williams, 30, joined Northern League side Whitley Bay last week having moved from the Seasiders, his home town club, 10 years ago and proceeding to make over 400 appearances in a Spartans shirt.

"It came to the time when I needed a new challenge," he said. "After 10 years I'd become a bit stale and simply felt a change was necessary. It's nothing to do with anything happening at the club. I'd like to thank the supporters, including those on the Fans Forum, for getting behind me over the years and I hope the side pushes on this coming season."

Williams, who played in every position except goalkeeper in his time at Blyth, will continue his link with Blyth via his teaching work in the club's Playing For Success education centre and furthermore he may become a supporter from the terraces.
"Yes, if I get the chance I'll be at Croft Park taking in a game and I'll look forward to Blyth fans, who perhaps can't get to an away Blyth match coming to watch me at the Bay."
