Disappointing but time to focus for Mason

Wednesday, 27 February 2013

Spartans goalscorer Lee Mason revealed the disappointment in the camp at the Doodson Sports Cup exit at the hands of league leaders North Ferriby United but urged his side to put the defeat behind them and focus on their league campaign. He said "It's disappointing not to go through but they're a very good side, their passing and movement was excellent so we can't take anything away from them but it's still disappointing to go out. We shouldn't be where we are in the league and now we have to concentrate on getting ourselves into that top half."

After playing the majority of the season on the right hand side of midfield Mason was pushed into his favoured striker position for the last fifteen minutes and the move was reward by the former Hartlepool United man getting his third goal of the season. A low left footed strike from the edge of the box got Spartans back on level terms and Mason hopes to have further opportunites to play in the forward role. He commented "I don't mind playing on that right wing but up front is my natural position and tonight I've gone up there and done what I am asked to do. It would be nice to get another chance up there and hopefully get more goals, it was a left foot swing as Robbie(Dale) would say but they all count"

With the likes of Tom Berj, Daniel Maguire and Mason himself going close Spartans had their chances to win the game and Mason feels that it is to their credit that they pushed an impressive North Ferriby side all the way. He said "We weren't out of the game at all, we had chances and kept at it well. In fact I would say that's how they got their second goal as we pushed on to get a winner they have caught us on the break but we kept at it well."
