Monday, 10 September 2012

Spartans have been rewarded for their victory over Garforth Town with another home tie in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round and will face manager Tommy Cassidy's former club Workington.

The Borough Park club currently sit 12th in the Blue Square North with nine points from a possible twenty one. Before they travel to Blyth they face an away trip to Brackley this coming Saturday.

Their last visit to Croft Park was in the Blue Square North last season when they came away with all three points in a 0-3 defeat for Spartans.

However Spartans were slightly more successful when the clubs last met in the FA Cup, a tie that also took place in the Second Qualifying Round at Croft Park. The 26th September 1992 was the date as a Steve Pyle hat-trick inspired Spartans to a 6-0 win with the other goals coming from Peattie, Middleton and an own goal. Spartans would go on to defeat Bishop Auckland and Stockton in the qualifying stages but were knocked out by Southport in a 1-2 defeat at Croft Park in the First Round proper.

Spartans boss Tommy Cassidy was in charge of Workington from 2001 to 2007. In 2004 he led the club to promotion to the Northern Premier League and quickly followed that up the following season with a runners up spot that secured promotion to the Blue Square North. Current Spartans players Shaun Vipond and Joe Kendrick have also had spells with Workington during their careers.

The tie will take place at Croft Park on Saturday 22nd September with a 3pm kick off.
