Interview | Nelson pleased to get Cain over the line

Blyth Spartans manager Michael Nelson has revealed his delight after finally adding midfielder Michael Cain to his squad.

Nelson was left impressed by Cain in pre-season, both in training and on the pitch after he featured in the 2-2 draw with Hartlepool United.

In fact, Nelson tried to get the former Walsall man signed up after his encouraging display against Pools, but a deal was unable to materialise.

Fast forward a couple of months however and Cain is finally a Blyth player. Nelson believes he'll add quality to his side.

He told blythspartans.com: "We offered him a deal after the Pools game but unfortunately we couldn't come to an agreement at the time, so we moved on to Liam Agnew.

"We would have loved to have got them both in but finances at the time wouldn't allow it. That said, we continued to monitor Michael's situation and kept in touch with him.

"It's a signing we tried to do earlier but it's very pleasing that we've finally got it done.

"He is very good on the ball and is very comfortable. He'll get it off the defenders and he'll also get forward and join the attack.

"He wasn't fully fit in terms of fitness and stamina wise when we played Hartlepool but he grounded out 90 minutes. His quality for the first hour was fantastic

"If anyone can remember him from watching on the live stream - I think I saw one comment on social media saying: 'Get the lad with the yellow boots signed up!'

"He's got quality and he has been working on his fitness, so we're very much looking forward to having him on board."

With Liam Agnew set to miss Saturday's clash with Kidderminster Harriers, Cain could make his debut right from the start.

Nelson added: "It is someone we needed to bring in to provide a little bit more depth in midfield but Michael is certainly not someone we're bringing in as cover.

"We would have liked to have signed him and Liam at the same time, so when they're both fit, I can see them playing as well.

"Hopefully, Liam won't be too much longer and we can have a full strength squad to pick from."
