Maguire wants improvement on the road after opening day win
Saturday, 16 August 2014
After an astonishing season last year Spartans striker Dan Maguire got his 2014/15 campaign off to the best possible start. The former Seaton Delaval man scored an unforgettable opener in the opening day win over Grantham Town and immediately set his sights on rectifying one of the most disappointing factors of last season. Spartans travel to Ashton United on Tuesday night and Maguire wants his side to improve their record on the road, starting with the game against last season's beaten play off finalists.
"It's a good way to get going this season. We start as we mean to go on and we have to take that into Tuesday at Ashton. We know our record away from home was poor last year so we have to improve on that this time around"
And what of THAT opening goal? It was a stunning strike from Maguire as he latched on to a flick from Robbie Dale before unleashing a vicious twenty yard strike into the far corner to send Croft Park into raptures. The man himself insisted he "just hit it" but did admit it was a great way to get his season up and running.
"I wasn't thinking about anything when it fell to me. I couldn't explain even now why I hit it, I just hit it but as soon as it left my foot I watched it go in all of the way. It was great to get off the mark"
