Tuesday, 15 August 2023

Spartans take to the road for the second time in four days as they make the journey to the Flamingo Land Stadium in North Yorkshire to face off against Scarborough Athletic.

Graham Fenton's side secured back-to-back wins on Saturday afternoon away to newly-promoted Warrington Town to kick off the campaign with six points - the first time the Club have achieved the feat in eight years.

JJ O'Donnell and JJ Hooper scored either side of a straight red card for Jack Bodenham in the previous weekend's fixture as an unchanged eleven turned out replicating a team performance from the opening day victory over Gloucester City with only Rio Joisce replacing Billy Gordon among the substitutes.

The triumph on Saturday propelled Spartans to the summit of the National League North standings, being the only side to register two victories with a perfect start to the campaign.

Team News

Despite receiving his marching orders on Saturday afternoon, Jack Bodenham will be available to feature against The Seadogs as his ban will not be in place until Spartans face Hereford at Croft Park on August 19th.

What We're Saying

Looking ahead to the clash against Scarborough following the 2-0 victory over Warrington Town, Graham Fenton said: "It's another place that we know how difficult it is to go to and get a result but we're in good fettle.

"The lads are enjoying themselves, they're working hard and if we do the same, tidy up some of the stuff at the top end of the pitch, we look like we're going to score goals now.

"Particularly away from home, we're building from the base of clean sheets, can we keep on getting clean sheets away from home as often as possible and then add on with that ability we've got at the top end to score goals?"

Opposition

The Seadogs fell to a 1-0 opening-day defeat against Peterborough Sports before bouncing back to a 3-0 win over Banbury United on Saturday.

They finished last season in eighth place, missing out on play-off position by two goals to Gloucester City who secured the final spot with the superior difference.

Jono Greening's side have brought in the likes of Ryan Qualter, Ryan Whitley, Charlie Marshall and Nick Hutton to bolster their ranks over the off-season.

What They're Saying

Seadogs manager Jono Greening commented post-Banbury United win: "It's good to get on the board with three points and start our season.

"We've got another tough game on Tuesday, Blyth have won two on the trot so we need to be up for it.

"If we can win on Tuesday, six points out of nine doesn't look so bad."

Last Time We Met

The North Yorkshire-based outfit completed a league double over Spartans in the 2022/23 National League North campaign.

They secured a 2-1 win at Croft Park as Lewis Maloney's decisive penalty in the 87th minute trumped Lewis McNall's equaliser after Michael Coulson broke the deadlock.

Two weeks into the new year, The Seadogs staged a valiant comeback, coming from behind twice to secure three points on their home patch as they won 3-2 courtesy of goals from Bailey Gooda, Kieran Glynn and Alex Wiles; Nicky Deverdics and Isaac Walker scored for Spartans on that January afternoon.
