Spartans in double loan swoop
Wednesday, 19 December 2012
Hot on the heels of the signings of striker Andrew Jennings and midfielder Craig Hubbard, manager Paddy Atkinson has further boosted his squad for the busy Christmas period. Newcastle United Under 21 duo Marcus Maddison and Michael Riley(pictured above, photo courtesy of nufc.co.uk) have agreed to join Spartans on work experience loans. The deals mean they will be available for selection for Spartans next five fixtures before expiring on Sunday 6th January, the day after Matlock Town are welcomed to Croft Park.
Winger Maddison has already spent a month on loan at Spartans making two appearances. He made an immediate impact on his debut in the 1-1 draw against Nantwich Town, setting up Spartans goal for captain Wayne Buchanan and then scored in his final game in the 1-5 defeat away to Marine. The Durham born player can play on either wing or up front and will be a further boost to Atkinson's attacking options.
Left back Riley is an attack minded defender and has made a number of appearances for the Magpies reserve side, making his debut in March 2011 against Arsenal's second string. The Walker born full back played a key role in the game as he set up a late winner for current Spartans striker Phil Airey as they beat their Gunners counterparts 2-1 at St James Park.
Both players will be looking to be named in Atkinson's squad as Spartans travel to Hednesford Town on Saturday.
