Spartans U9s 0 Howden Rockets 2
Sunday, 26 April 2009
This was always going to be Spartans' hardest game of the season and a win would guarantee us second place in the league. However, we were put under pressure from the start against a very skilfull Howden Rockets side. Despite the pressure and some good chances from Howden, Spartans had a few chances too. However, half time saw deadlock at 0-0. Spartans started the second half the stronger side and took the pressure to Howden, but gradually they came back into it. There was some great defensive play from Tom Marshall and John Paul Megson and Daniel Brown pulled off some good saves. However, with ten minutes to go, Howden got the break when Spartans left too much space in midfield which was exploited for them to go 1-0 down. However, Spartans still did not give up and pushed forward when they could and a powerful free kick from Marshall went just wide. Howden then got space in the Spartans box and scored to make it 2-0 with only a few minutes left and this was how the match finished. However, this was a fighting performance from the Under 9s against a side who have won every one of their games this season. The team walked away with their heads held high when a Howden parent was overheard saying this had been their hardest game of the season. A win by Coast Soccer meant that Spartans were pushed into third place in the final league table.
